Spanish energy firm Iberdrola says that its incorporation into the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) will cement its commitment to renewable and sustainable energy.
Iberdrola has invested €25 billion in the renewable energy sector in the last decade and is one of the world's largest renewable energy firms. It joins other global electricity firms such as Electricité de France and Hydro-Quebec in the GSEP, which aims to promote sustainable energy development in developing countries.
Other companies in the GSEP includes Brazil's Eletrobras and Mexico's Comisión Federal de Electricidad. The organisation was created in 1992, the year of the Rio Earth Summit.
Iberdrola owns over 200 wind farms in Spain and another 330 elsewhere and has a total installed renewable energy capacity of 14 000 MW.
GSEP now has a membership of 14 companies, which together account for one-third of global electricity use.
