Iberdrola Renovables has celebrated the opening of continental Europe's largest renewable energy plant following its purchase of the facility from Spanish wind turbine company Gamesa.
The 292 MW El Andévalo wind farm was commissioned in 2010 and consists of eight wind farms in the south of Spain's Huelva province. Its development also included the construction of a new transmission line connecting Spain and Portugal, making the facility an important strategic link.
Iberdrola has acquired the El Andévalo facility from Gamesa under a framework agreement for the sale of wind farms in Andalusia signed by the two companies in 2005. The purchase secures Iberdrola's leading position in both the Andalusian and Spanish renewable energy sectors, says the company.
All of the wind farms are equipped with Gamesa's wind turbine technology, including its G90 and G58 units.
Iberdrola Renovables' 322 MW Whitelee wind power complex in Scotland is the largest renewable energy facility in Europe.
