Iberdrola has passed the landmark figure of 8000 MW of renewable energy capacity in Europe with the commissioning of new wind farms in Cyprus and Poland.
In August the Spanish energy giant brought its first wind facility in Cyprus on-line – a 20 MW facility in Aghia Anna – and also commissioned a 24 MW wind farm in Bystra, Poland. It has also entered the Catalan and Asturian wind power markets in Spain with the acquisition of four wind farms.
Iberdrola has the largest pipeline of renewable energy projects of any company in Europe, at 35 000 MW. It is developing wind, wave and tidal energy projects, and says that the Eastern European renewable energy market is a key focus.
The company is currently developing the Dobrogea wind farm in the Constanza area of Romania, which at 1500 MW is the world’s most ambitious onshore development.
It is already the leader in wind energy in Spain, the UK, Greece and Hungary. Its pipeline of offshore wind power projects stands at 10 000 MW, and includes the 389 MW West of Duddon Sands project in the UK, and the 7200 MW East Anglia Array, which is to be developed jointly with Vattenfall.
