Spanish firm Iberdrola Renewables has submitted proposals to the Ministry of Industry to develop six offshore wind power projects, cementing its position as a leading renewable energy company.
The company hopes to develop offshore projects with an aggregate generation capacity of 3000 MW off Spain’s Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, with commissioning planned for 2011-2015.
Iberdrola Renewables owns 7704 MW of renewable energy capacity and has a further 42 000 MW in its project pipeline. It was recently named by Emerging Energy Research as the global leader in wind power plant ownership, ahead of the USA’s FPL Energy.
The renewable energy unit of Spanish utility Iberdrola is also planning to build new offshore wind capacity in the UK and Germany, and is developing offshore wave energy projects in both Spain and Scotland.
Industry rankings published by Emerging Energy Research indicate that Iberdrola Renewables has leapt ahead of FPL by adding over 1.55 GW of wind power capacity to its portfolio in 2007. It now operates just over 6.9 GW of wind capacity.
