Mexican utility CFE has made significant progress towards its wind energy target with the award of a contract for the construction of a major new wind farm in the country to Iberdrola Renovables.

The Spanish firm is to build and operate the La Venta III wind farm, selling the energy to CFE under a 20-year contract. The project is the first in a series of CFE initiatives designed to bring wind generation capacity in Mexico to 500 MW over the next few years.

La Venta III will be situated in the municipality of Santo Domingo Ingenio in Oaxaca state and will have an installed capacity of 102.85 MW. Construction will start this year and the project is slated to come on stream in November 2010.

The project will consist of 21 Gamesa Eólica G52 wind turbines, each measuring 44 m in height. Start-up of the project will make a major contribution to economic development in Oaxaca state, says Iberdrola.

Iberdrola recently inaugurated the La Ventosa wind farm, the second wind farm to be built in Mexico and the first to be developed in the country entirely with private capital.
