India OKs new coal plant

20 March 2014

India's Ministry of Environment has given its approval to the development of a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Tamil Nadu state.

The 1600 MW Ennore SEZ power plant will be situated next to the existing North Chennai thermal power station, in Thiruvallur district, north of Chennai. It will use Indian coal as well as coal imported from Indonesia.

The 2 x 800 MW plant will help the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) meet the rapid growth in demand for electricity in the state, driven by rapid population growth, industrialisation and urbanisation.
