India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a study to assess the potential for floating solar farms in the country.
MNRE has joined forces with Germany's KfW development bank to build utility-scale floating solar farms in Maharashtra and Kerala states to demonstrate the viability of the technology.
The two solar farms would total 40 MW of capacity and form part of a wider study into floating solar technology in India.
The study was set up by MNRE and will be carried out by the National Institute of Solar Energy and the Renewable Energy College. Initial estimates put India's potential for floating solar capacity at 310 GW, local media quoted the Kolkata-based Renewable Energy College as saying.
The two solar farms will cost approximately $44 million to build.
