The Indonesian government is trying to encourage private investment in its power industry as power shortages loom. The Mines and Energy minister believes that private sector help is needed to speed the development of new generating capacity. However the private sector is likely to be wary of involvement. The regional economic crisis of mid-1997 left a number of private projects suspended.
