Ingeteam selected for Whitelee battery

22 July 2020

ScottishPower Renewables, which is part of the Spanish Iberdrola Group, has selected Ingeteam to supply a 50 MWh battery storage system for the 539 MW Whitelee wind farm in Scotland. Ingeteam, which is based in Spain, will provide the battery, control system and power converters, ScottishPower said.

The battery system will start operating at the end of 2020 and will complete testing for grid code compliance in the first quarter of 2021. It will be used for a number of different applications, including helping ScottishPower to manage the energy delivered by the wind farm. It will also allow ScottishPower Renewables to take part in the UK’s frequency regulation market.

The battery will mean that during troughs in demand, Whitelee can continue to generate at peak capacity, with the surplus charging the battery. This can then be discharged when the demand is higher than the generating capacity, helping Whitelee to make up any shortfall.
