Inpex buys into Sarulla

Japan's Inpex Corp. has reached an agreement with a consortium of Japanese, Indonesian and US companies to participate indirectly in the Sarulla geothermal power project.

Inpex has bought a 49 per cent stake in an affiliate of PT Medco Power Indonesia, which controls just over 37 per cent of the project.

Sarulla is a 330 MW geothermal power plant being developed in the Sarulla geothermal field in North Sumatra Province by an international consortium. The plant is currently under construction and is expected to start operating in 2016.

The development consortium includes Itochu Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., Medco and Ormat Technologies. The plant is expected to reach its maximum output of 330 MW by 2018.
