Balfour Beatty has been awarded two new overhead line projects worth approximately £5.3million with UK utility Electricity North West. It will be installing a new type of composite cored electricity conductor, the first time this has been used by Electricity North West. The ACCC conductor has a number of advantages over the conventional all-aluminium or steel-reinforced conductor. In particular, it increases the network capacity to allow for existing and future wind farm connections on the existing 33kV line without the need to build a higher voltage replacement line.
The first scheme will run through Cumbria from Broughton Moor to Aspatria and the second between Stainburn and Embleton. Both projects involve the replacement of over 60 pylons, the refurbishment of 29 km of existing insulators and fittings and the installation of the new ACCC conductor.
