The world's largest diesel power plant is to be supplied to Africa's largest country. In a consortium with the German company Siemens (the project leader) MAN B&W's Polish licensee H. Cegielski has signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract for the supply, operation and maintenance of the 257 MW Kilo-X plant in Khartoum, Sudan with the Malaysian independent power producer DIT Power Kilo-X Ltd. (DPKX). The plant will consist of one 7-cylinder engine and six 12-cylinder K80MC-S engines of MAN B&W design, and is initially to run on imported heavy fuel oil and later on local heavy fuel oil. The unit, which is to be commissioned in 2004, will be the largest diesel power plant ever built in one continuous stage. It will bring the total amount of stationary low-speed diesel engines of the MC-S generation, introduced in early 1985, on order and in service up to 2000 MW and make the K80MC-S engine the most popular stationary model, with a total sale of 25 units.
