Jiangsu Rudong offshore wind power comes online

1 June 2012

The Jiangsu Rudong Offshore wind power plant has now begun full operation. It is Siemens' first order for offshore wind power outside Europe. The company has installed 21 SWT-2.3-101 WTGs off the coast of the Rudong district in the East China Sea, 250 km northeast of Shanghai, providing a total output of approximately 50 MW. The customer is Jiangsu Longyuan Offshore Wind Power Co Ltd, a subsidiary of one of the world's largest wind energy project developers, China Longyuan Power Group Corporation Ltd. The scope of delivery also includes a five-year service and maintenance agreement.

The market for offshore wind energy in China is currently gaining momentum. China plans to install 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2020. Siemens produced the major turbine components of the 50 MW project at its Shanghai production facility. Since November 2010, blades have been fabricated there both for the Chinese market and for export. A nacelle manufacturing facility has been operating at the same location since the spring of 2011.
