Kamchatka geothermal on line

5 October 2002

The 2x25 MW Mutnovo geothermal power plant in east Kamchatka, the largest such plant in the region, came on line in October.

The project, owned by UES and financed by a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, will provide a quarter of Kamchatka's electricity needs and save up to 90 000 tons of the 480 000 tons of fuel oil expensively imported into the area every year, mainly for combined heat and power plants in a part of Russia notorious for its extremely severe climatic conditions.
