KCE brings NY storage plant on-line

20 September 2019

The largest battery energy storage system in New York has been fully commissioned, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and project developer Key Capture Energy (KCE).

The 20 MW KCE NY1 battery system will enhance power grid performance and reliability in New York state and supports Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Green New Deal, a state-wide climate change initiative.

The KCE NY1 lithium-ion battery is located in the Capital Region and is one of several utility-scale battery projects in New York being developed by KCE, which last year joined START-UP NY, a programme fostering links between academic institutions and businesses to advance the green economy in New York.

Governor Cuomo has mandated the introduction of 3000 MW of energy storage capacity in the state by 2030, alongside 2.4 GW of offshore wind energy capacity. “Governor Cuomo has set New York on a path to lead the country and the world when it comes to deploying clean energy, and this project is more evidence that New York is not wasting any time getting started,” said Alicia Barton, President and CEO, NYSERDA. “This first project under NYSERDA’s energy storage incentive program – the largest battery installation in the state to date – will enhance our electric system and demonstrate the value of large scale energy storage systems that will accelerate our ability to meet the state’s commitment to a carbon-free electric system by 2040.”

KCE is also developing KCE NY3, a utility-scale battery storage project in Pomona, New York, in partnership with Orange & Rockland (O&R).
