A landfill site owner in Chile says that its plans to expand a landfill gas-to-energy plant will help to reduce the impact of its site on local water quality.
KDM Energia owns the Loma Los Colorados landfill site and has placed an order with GE Energy for six Jenbacher gas engines to expand the generating capacity of an existing landfill gas-to-energy plant.
The 8.4 MW Lomas Los Colorados II expansion project will feature six 1.4 MW J420 Jenbacher units operating on landfill gas generated by the site, which receives waste from the nearby city of Santiago.
GE expects the new engines to enter operation between 2012 and 2014, in line with landfill gas production. Together with seven existing engines at the site, the output of the plant will be 18 MW.
“We are very excited to build on the success we have had with our Loma Los Colorados landfill gas-to-energy project, which is serving as an important renewable energy model for the region as Chile looks to diversify its energy mix,” said Sergio Durandeau, general manager of KDM Energia.
