Enel and Kepco are to co-operate in the development of technologies that they say will play a crucial role in shaping the energy-efficient low-carbon society of the future.
The two utilities have signed a letter of intent and several Memoranda of Understanding outlining plans for them to cooperate and exchange information in the fields of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and smart grid technology.
The agreements were signed by Fulvio Conti, CEO of Enel, and Kim Ssang-Su, CEO and Chairman of Kepco, at Kepco’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.
The two firms’ pledge to cooperate could result in the joint construction and testing of one pilot and one demonstration CCS plant, according to Enel, which is currently testing a post-combustion CCS system at its Brindisi power plant in Italy.
In the field of smart grids, Enel and Kepco have agreed to collaborate in the research, development and implementation of intelligent networks as well as technology standardization.
Enel is developing two further CCS demonstration projects in Europe and is also active in smart grid technology development. It said in a statement that it is “a world leader in both technologies”.
Enel and Kepco will also develop jointly electric vehicle recharging infrastructure.
