Spanish firm Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios has started construction of a $117.5 million wind farm in Uruguay.
The 49 MW Kiyú wind farm will comprise 16 Vestas V112-3075kW wind turbines and is being developed on behalf of Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank.
The Kiyú wind farm is located in the San José district of Uruguay. A 150 kV transmission line will also be built as part of the project, says Mott MacDonald, which is monitoring the construction process.
"The Kiyú wind farm is part of a major initiative by the Uruguayan government to reduce the country's dependence on expensive electricity imports during drought periods of the year," said Alvaro Corral, Mott MacDonald project manager. "This will diversify the country's energy sector by installing 1200MW of wind capacity by the end of 2015."
Kiyú is due to start operating by the end of 2015.
