Bringing national legislation in line with EU standards, the Latvian government has passed a new power market law.
With its passage, Latvian consumers will be able to choose electricity supplier from anywhere in the EU market while the state-owned Latvenergo is to be unbundled into transmission, distribution and generation activities. The transmission arm will be obligated to finance connection to large industrial users.
The law also stipulates that up to 49% of all power consumed in Latvia by 2010 must come from renewables, up from 45% currently.
