Low carbon supply strategy for UK

14 July 2005

A new report published by the UK’s Council for Science and Technology (CST) calls for a new strategic approach to the challenge of climate change, finding that investment in low-carbon, large-scale sources of electricity are key to future energy policy in the UK.

The CST, which advises the government on science and technology policy, makes a number of recommendations in the report including:

  • Immediate investment in large-scale, low-carbon generation to meet carbon dioxide reduction targets.
  • Keeping nuclear option open and placing more emphasis on carbon sequestration and tidal power.
  • Government investment in R&D to be aimed at renewables, energy management and storage.
  • Development of the transmission network to facilitate distributed and diverse generation, and to address regulatory issues.
