Malaysian IPP Malakoff has started commercial operations at a new supercritical coal-fired power unit at the Tanjung Bin power plant in Johor, Malaysia.
The 1 GW Tanjung Bin T4 unit entered commercial operation in March, according to reports, after first synchronization in October 2015. Construction took four years and was carried out by a GE-led consortium under an engineering, procurement and construction contract.
Unit 4 was built adjacent to three existing coal-fired units at the plant that generate a combined 2100 MW. GE supplied the key equipment - including the steam turbine and generator, the ultrasupercritical boiler, and environmental control systems - and was responsible for the overall integration and commissioning of the plant.
According to Malakoff, the T4 plant is Malaysia's first independent power project awarded by the Energy Commission via a competitive bidding process. Power from the project will be sold under a 25-year power-purchase agreement signed with Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd.
