Marubeni has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Myanmar to assess the feasibility of constructing an 1800-2000 MW coal fired power plant.
Marubeni says that the project would be based on advanced ultra-supercritical technology and would supply power to Myanmar as well as Thailand. It plans to form a consortium with Thai firm Global Power Synergy Company, EGAT International of Thailand, and local companies in Myanmar and Thailand to conduct the feasibility study.
The proposed plant would help Myanmar to overcome power shortages caused by recent economic growth and would also help Thailand to meet growing electricity demand. Some 80 per cent of the plant's output would go to Thailand and the remainder to Myanmar.
The plant would be built in Tanintharyi, southern Myanmar, at a cost of around $3 billion. Construction could start in 2016.
