Masdar launches CSP initiative

20 March 2008

Abu Dhabi energy company Masdar has joined forces with Spain’s Sener to launch a joint venture to develop, build and operate large concentrated solar power (CSP) plants worldwide.

The new joint venture company – Torresol Power – is aiming to become a world leader in the development of CSP projects by launching the construction of two large plants per year. It will start its activities in Spain with three projects including one with a CSP central tower receiver design.

Torresol’s long-term goal is to develop 320 MW over the next five years, reaching 1000 MW in ten years. It wants to introduce and test new technologies in every project in order to increase the competitive position and reliability of CSP technology.

Sener is currently designing and building three 50 MW CSP plants with molten salt storage in Spain, and is testing and designing innovative solutions for CSP tower plants.
