MHI boosts turbine capacity

17 May 2007

One investment involves construction of a plant dedicated to production of steam turbines for nuclear power plants, aimed at further enhancing product quality and expanding production capacity.

Plans also call for the plant to produce one of the world's largest high-efficiency turbines, with blades in the 70-inch (1.7m) class. The investment will span a three-year period beginning this year to establish a manufacturing structure by March 2011 capable of accommodating turbines for both replacement and new installations in Japan and overseas.

The other investment will focus on turbines for gas-fired power generation to shift the company’s production structure to its higher-efficiency G-type turbines and will see the plant expanded to boost in-house production capacity of large components. Equipment installation is scheduled to be completed in fiscal 2009 when the plant will be able to produce more than 30 G-type gas turbines per-year.
