Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has received an order for a steam turbine for the 750 MW Comanche Unit 3 supercritical coal-fired power plant to be built near Pueblo, Colorado.
The order was placed by Public Service Co of Colorado (PSCo), a subsidiary of Xcel Energy based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which is in charge of operation and management of the existing Comanche Units 1 and 2. This first supercritical steam turbine order from the US for MHI is due for delivery in June 2007, and the plant will go into commercial operation in July 2009.
MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works will design and manufacture the turbine.
In a related contract, PSCo has awarded a contract for the design, supply, and commissioning of a supercritical boiler to Alstom, also for the Comanche unit 3 project.
The boiler will be one of the most advanced steam plants to be built in the US to date and is designed to burn low-sulphur Powder River Basin coal.
Using Alstom’s TFS 2000“ firing system, coupled with a selective catalytic reduction system, will result in one of the lowest nitrogen oxide emissions in the country.
