MHI wins Chile coal firing contract

6 December 2012

Chilean power generator Empresa Eléctrica Guacolda SA is to boost its generating capacity with the addition of a new 154 MW coal fired power plant to its portfolio.

Guacolda has placed an order with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) for the turnkey construction of the new facility. The order is the fifth unit ordered from MHI by Guacolda, following earlier orders for 150 MW and 152 MW plants at the same site..

The new unit will consist of a boiler, steam turbine, generator, steam condenser and emission removal systems. MHI will manufacture all of the major equipment and build the plant in Chile’s northern grid system.

The new plant will help Chile to meet rising electricity demand in the north of the country, where robust growth in the mining sector is driving strong economic expansion.
