MHI wins Krishnapatnam ST contract

23 February 2009

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) says that the award of a major steam turbine contract in India is an indication that the company’s business strategy in the country is paying off.

The Japanese firm has received an order for two supercritical-pressure steam turbines from Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Limited (APPDCL), which is developing a 2 x 800 MW coal fired project at Krishnapatnam in southeastern India. The two units are slated for delivery in 2010.

The 1600 MW Krishnapatnam project will help to ease tight electricity supplies in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of many large-scale power generation projects underway in India, where robust economic growth is fuelling a rapid rise in electricity demand.

MHI says it will supply the steam turbine components to L&T-MHI Turbine Generators Private Limited, a joint venture between MHI, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) established in 2007 to manufacture and market steam turbines and generators. MELCO will supply the generator components.

APPDCL is a subsidiary of Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (Apgenco) and was established as a special purpose vehicle to develop power projects on a fast track basis. The company is also developing a 2100 MW combined cycle power plant near Karimnagar, 160 km north of Hyderabad.

The Krishnapatnam power plant will use a blend of imported and domestic coal. It will be located 5 km from Krishnapatnam port, one of India’s largest and fastest-growing ports.

Strong demand for power generation equipment in India has led MHI to undertake aggressive marketing activities in the country, including the creation of joint ventures with companies such as L&T. The Japan-based firm says that it will further strengthen its activities to develop the market for highly efficient supercritical pressure steam turbines and boilers in India.

Economic growth reached nine per cent in India in 2007 and is expected to remain at seven per cent in 2008 and 2009.
