Mainstream Renewable Power has made a significant step forward with the development of a 450 MW offshore wind farm by submitting an application for consent for the project.
The renewable energy firm says that the application for the Neart na Gaoithe (NnA) wind farm follows three years of project development and that construction could start in 2015.
According to the application, the project would consist of between 64 and 125 wind turbines occupying an area of 105 km2 at least 15 km off the Fife coast in Scottish waters. Mainstream aims to reach financial close on the project in 2013 and secured grid connection for the facility in 2010.
The £1.4 billion project would be of strategic importance to Scotland, says Mainstream, which has a development pipeline in the UK and Germany of 7500 MW of offshore wind farms.
The company hopes that the project will be fully operational by the end of 2016.
