Minergy building new coal plant

26 June 2014

A new 110 MW coal fired power plant under construction in Mindanao will help to reduce the island's power deficit to 68 MW.

The plant is being developed by Minergy Coal, a power generation firm established by power distributor Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co, (CEPALCO).

The utility has awarded the contract for the supply of the plant's steam turbines to GE. Construction is being led by Mitsubishi and Toshiba Plant Systems & Services Corp.

GE said that the project was a "significant milestone" for the company as it represented its return to the Philippine market after being inactive for over a decade.

The current power deficit in Mindanao is estimated to be 134 MW, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. The new plant would also provide power security for CEPALCO's franchise areas in Mindanao.
