Mongstad CCS moves forward with supplier qualification

20 November 2011

Five companies have been selected by Gassnova and Statoil to compete for the opportunity to install a carbon capture system at a combined cycle power plant in Norway.

The five companies will participate in the technology qualification programme for the carbon capture project at Mongstad, the results of which will have international significance for the development of carbon capture and storage technology.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Alstom, Siemens, Aker Clean Carbon and a Huaneng-CERI Powerspan joint venture will all have to show that their carbon capture technology can be used at Mongstad by carrying out feasibility studies, demonstrations and a concept design for a full-scale plant.

Gassnova says it is aiming to select a single supplier based on the results of the technology qualification programme in 2014.

“[The Mongstad carbon capture project] is a very large industrial and technological development project, and a plant of similar size has never been built before,” said Kurt Georgsen, Statoil Vice President. “For Statoil, it is very important that the system works as intended and does not represent any danger to people or the environment.

“For CO2 capture technology in general, it is also important that the project shows that CCS can be accomplished elsewhere: therefore it is of great importance that there is a responsible project implementation that takes care of uncertainties in the best possible way, ensuring the best technical solutions at the lowest possible cost.”
