Nanticoke accused of air pollution

5 August 2002

The Ontario Clean Air Alliance has accused the Nanticoke coal-fired power plant of producing more air pollution than four of the Canadian regions and of being the single worst source of pollution in the country.

The Alliance claims that based on federal data the plant, which is located on the shore of Lake Erie, is responsible for six per cent of the air pollution in Canada and 13 per cent of the Ontario total. Ontario Power Generation, the company which operates the plant, insists that the station meets all regulations set by the province. It is known to be installing emission control equipment to reduce pollution further. The Alliance's position is that the regulations are far too weak, and that all Ontario's coal fired stations should be treated in the same way as Lakeview, which was directed last year to stop burning coal by 2005 or be shut down.
