NEC, Enel, to collaborate on smart grids

28 April 2011

NEC Corporation has announced an agreement with major Italian power group Enel SpA to form a strategic partnership for developing next-generation smart grid systems.

NEC will develop high-capacity power storage systems, a key element of smart grids, and their controllers, by exploiting its expertise in lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles. These devices are expected to be installed at substations and elsewhere on power grids to store surplus power and to enhance supply-demand smoothing.

A demonstration system will be built in Italy, using the distribution network of Enel Distribuzione. Later, NEC and Enel's power distribution system arm will jointly roll out commercial smart grid services in Italy.

NEC is also participating in smart grid test projects in Japan and the USA. The company aims to expand its new-energy and other environment-related businesses, with a goal of generating 100 billion yen in sales in fiscal 2012 and 300 billion yen in fiscal 2017.
