The move came at the meeting of the Electricity Cross-Border Committee which has evaluated the risks of possible disturbances in electricity supply this summer.
"Information sharing with other grid operators shall be improved – electricity network operators shall receive immediately the information on the action taken by the affected operators whether network operators or generators. Improved co-ordination shall reduce the risk of blackouts and help to protect European consumers", said Piebalgs. He has asked ETSO, the Association of the European Transmission System Operators, to present to the Electricity Cross-Border Committee their analysis of the situation as well as the preventive measures taken by their members in order to avoid severe blackouts.
Beyond the necessary measures forecast for this summer, the Commission intends to make a series of legislative proposals by the end of September, including adopting common binding network security standards; enhancing co-ordination between electricity network operators to ensure an effective real-time operation of the European grid requiring effective unbundling; Setting up a formal Transmission System Operator body as a means to enforce the existing cooperation; and, improving investments in the European grid both to ensure its reliability.
