New CCGT unit for Hemweg

21 April 2010

Siemens Energy has been contracted by Netherlands utility Nuon for the turnkey construction of a 435 MW combined cycle power plant. Nuon, a subsidiary of Vattenfall, is expecting to start commercial operations at the Hemweg 9 plant in 2012. A long-term maintenance agreement has also been signed.

The plant will be designed to attain a very high efficiency level of around 59 percent and offer maximised operational flexibility with low nitrogen oxide emissions.

Following the power plant projects of Sloe, Rijnmond and Enecogen, this is the fourth order since 2007 that Siemens has won in the Netherlands for turnkey construction of combined cycle power plants. “This new order, which we’ve secured within a year after the Enecogen project, shows that combined cycle power plants will play an increasingly important role in the fleets operated by European utilities. Because they ensure load balancing with increasing wind-based feed-in and at the same time meet the more stringent environmental requirements,“ said Michael Suess, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy.

Siemens has developed high efficiency power plant concepts based on its F-class gas turbine technology. These plant concepts also feature fast start capability and advanced fast cycling – characteristics that are especially attractive in the liberalised power market.
The new gas-fired combined cycle plant Hemweg 9 will replace the old Hemweg 7. In addition to turnkey construction Siemens will supply the main components: an SGT5-4000F gas turbine, an SST5-5000 steam turbine, a hydrogen-cooled generator, the entire electrical equipment and an SPPA-T3000 I&C system and will carry out long-term maintenance services on the power train – gas turbine, steam turbine and generator.
