New turbines for UKs Aberthaw

29 November 2005

Installation of the new steam turbines is due to begin in 2007 and are expected to be operational from 2008.

Construction has already started on a new £100 million ($172 million) Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) project at Aberthaw which was announced in June.

Both the turbine refit contract and the FGD installation have been won by Alstom with combined orders worth $176 million.

The first contract is for the design, engineering and installation of steam turbine retrofit solutions for the three units at the station. The second contract, in consortium with AMEC, is for emission control systems including a seawater flue gas desulphurisation system. Alstom will supply the emission control systems and components, while AMEC will be responsible for the structural and civil engineering design and overall site management.
