Nexans to provide power umbilical for Julia project in Gulf of Mexico

12 August 2013

Nexans has been awarded a major contract by OneSubsea to supply an integrated power umbilical solution and associated termination hardware for Exxon Mobil's Julia oilfield development in the Gulf of Mexico. The power umbilical, which combines power cables and other services in a single cross section, will be 23 km in length and will be installed at a depth of 2000 metres. It will tieback the Julia field subsea systems to a semi-submersible production unit.

Production will take place at Nexans' specialised subsea cable manufacturing facilities in Halden, Norway. Krister Granlie, Vice President Hybrid Underwater Cables, Nexans Norway, commented "It is clear that a growing number of operators are recognising that power umbilicals, while complex in design, offer a more elegant and cost-effective approach than the transportation and installation of separate subsea power cables and umbilicals".
