NLC planning 2000 MW supercritical in Tamil Nadu

9 September 2010

Indian public sector integrated power company Neyveli Lignite Corporation has announced its intention to build a 1980 MW (3 x 660 MW) power plant in Tamil Nadu. It would be NLC's first supercritical thermal power plant project. Although the plan is at a very early stage, it is likely that the project site would be near the port city of Karaikal.

The Tamil Nadu plant is among several new projects that the company is planning. One notable project is for a 2000 MW plant near Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It would be a joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, the generation arm of the state's electricity board.

NLC is also exploring the feasibility of taking part in the Cheyyur, Tamil Nadu, ultra mega power project that could become a possibility if approved by the Indian government.
