NRG and GenOn to merge

7 August 2012

Following hard on the heels of the completion of the Duke and Progress Energy merger - with a combined installed capacity of 57 GWe - comes the news that NRG and GenOn have signed a "definitive agreement" to merge, creating a new generator with 47 GW of capacity in a diverse fleet of "fossil fuel, nuclear, solar and wind capacity across the merit order." NRG president and CEO David Crane will continue his present positions with the combined company, which will retain the name NRG Energy.
