NTPC commissions new 660 MW supercrit

State run power giant NTPC has started operations at the first supercritical 660 MW unit at the 2980 MW Sipat plant in Chattisgarh, India.

With the commissioning of these 660 MW, total operational capacity at Sipat is now 1660 MW, raising NTPC's installed capacity to 34 854 MW.

The Sipat project has three units of 660 MW in stage I and 2 units of 500 MW in stage II, which are already operational. The plant’s power output is being exported mainly to the Western Region states of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Daman & Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli.

NTPC currently has an operational capacity of over 8000 MW in the Western Region and construction is in hand of over 4000 MW capacity at Mouda, Vindhyachal, Sipat and Solapur, all supercritical or ultra super-critical coal-based power plants.

The utility has floated tenders for 9 units of 660 MW and 800 MW for its upcoming projects in the country’s12th plan.
