The Indian government has reported that national power utility NTPC will exceed the revised capacity addition target of 9220 MW in the 11th five-year plan ending 31 March 2012. The state run power giant had already added 4480 MW capacity byl January this year.
Minister of State for Power Mr KC Venugopal said "Another 1660 MW is expected to be commissioned by March 2011. During 2011-12, NTPC is targeting capacity addition of 4320 MW.”
The target was revised to 9220 MW during the mid-term review in January 2010 from 17760 MW, although 13 NTPC power projects are currently under construction. They include the 1000 MW Simhadri-II in Andhra Pradesh and the 1980 MW Barh STPP Stage I in Bihar.
The company has also invited main plant bids for many projects, including the 1,320 MW Solapur STPP in Maharashtra.
At present, NTPC has an installed capacity of over 33 GW and operates 28 power stations. It is the country's largest power producer and aims to have a capacity of 75 GW by 2017.
