Entergy Corp has announced closure of its purchase of two nuclear power plants from the New York Power Authority. The company is buying Indian Point unit 3 in Westchester County, New York, and the James A FitzPatrick plant in Oswego County. The cost of the deal to Entergy is $967 million. The sale was agreed in March.
Entergy has been pursuing a concerted policy to acquire nuclear assets, particularly in the northeast of the country. It has already bought the Pilgrim nuclear station at Plymouth Massachusetts from Boston Edison. In November it agreed to buy two nuclear plants, Indian Point units 1 and 2, from Con Edison. This deal is expected to be completed by mid-2001. Indian Point 1 has been shut down and in safe storage since the 1970s while Con Edison is currently replacing four steam generators in unit 2 and expected to return that plant to service by the end of 2000.
Elsewhere in the USA, Entergy has been operating five nuclear plants in Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana under regulatory jurisdictions for more than 20 years. It is also managing the decommissioning of the Millstone unit 1 in Waterford Connecticut and Maine Yankee at Wiscasset, Maine.
