The company bought carbon emission offsets from renewable generator TrustPower during its certification process for carbon neutrality. The statement follows a recent announcement from the company that it has been granted CarboNZero certification from Landcare Research that the generation and retailing of its electricity is carbon neutral, a first for the country.
“In respect of the emissions that Meridian Energy could not eliminate for the measurement period, we purchased emission offsets generated by TrustPower's Tararua Wind Farm Stage II Project in the Manawatu,” Turner said.
The move came despite the fact that Meridian, which produces around a third of the nation’s power, also generates carbon credits from its own renewable projects, such as the Te Apiti and White Hill wind farms in the Manawatu and Southland. However, Turner said he believes that it is more transparent for organisations to purchase verified carbon credits from other companies rather than use their own projects to offset their own carbon liability.
