OFFSHORE DRILLING BAN CONTESTED

5 February 2002

The US administration is to contest a judicial decision to block new oil and natural gas drilling off the coast of California, claiming its plan to extend 36 offshore leases held by oil companies should not be subject to state review. The decision, made in June last year, halted exploration and drilling in 36 offshore tracts pending environmental review and approval by the California Coastal Commission.
