21 August 2010

The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with GDF Suez for the Barka 3 and Sohar 2 independent power projects (IPPs).

Under the terms of the contracts, the output of the two plants will be sold to OPWP for a term of 15 years. GDF Suez is developing the projects in consortium with Oman's Bahwan engineering as well as Yonden and Sojitz of Japan.

The GDF Suez consortium was awarded the contract for Barka 3 and Sohar 2 in May 2010 and will invest a total of $1700 million in the projects. The EPC contractor for the projects is a consortium of Siemens and GS Engineering.

Both plants will have a capacity of 744 MW.

Oman's installed capacity stands at around 3600 MW and the Sultanate is planning to increase this to 5900 MW by 2015.
