The UK’s leading opposition party has pledged to repeal the Climate Change Levy proposed by the current administration and due to take effect from April next year. Arguing that the Levy is an energy tax that makes the UK less competitive, the Conservatives have promised to abolish the tax if elected. The government contends that the Levy is neutral on the overall tax burden on business as it is balanced by a cut in national insurance contributions that employers must make for workers. However, industries with a large energy demand but few staff are likely to suffer considerably more than those companies with many staff but minimal power demand.
