Alberta has marked the official start-up of western Canada's largest renewable energy project, the 300 MW Blackspring Ridge wind farm.
EDF EN Canada and Enbridge held a dedication ceremony for the C$600 million project, which began construction in May 2013 and started operating 12 months later.
The project consists of 166 Vestas V100-1.8 MW wind turbines installed across 19 400 ha of land in Vulcan County. The Albertan government invested C$10 million in funding for the project through the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation.
"The Blackspring Ridge project is a joint effort between industry and government that demonstrates Alberta's commitment to renewable energy development," said Alberta Energy Minister Diana McQueen. "The government of Alberta is proud to support state-of-the-art projects, like Blackspring Ridge, as we work together to green the grid in Alberta."
