Panda Power Funds has started construction on the 829 MW Patriot combined-cycle natural-gas fuelled power plant in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, US.
The project, which will use Siemens H-class gas turbine technology, is expected to begin commercial operations in mid-2016. Its location close to the Marcellus shale gas formation is expected to provide the project with significant operating cost advantages.
Under a $400 million contract awarded in late 2013, Siemens is supplying two integrated power islands for the plant. They each comprise one SGT6-8000H gas turbine, one SST6-5000 steam turbine, one hydrogen-cooled SGen6-2000H generator, and one heat recovery steam generator. Siemens will also provide maintenance for the main components associated with the gas turbine under a long term service programme.
The Patriot project, which is being built by EPC contractor Gemma-Lane Patriot Partners, is expected to create up to 500 onsite jobs during construction.
The project is expected to contribute a total of $5.85 billion to the local economy during construction and the first decade of operation.It will also use air cooling, therefore avoiding discharges into the Susquehanna River.
