Indonesian utility PT PLN (Persero) is to further increase generating capacity in the Java-Bali grid with the addition of a 235 MW combined cycle unit to the Muara Tawa power plant.
The fifth unit will be built by an Alstom-Marubeni consortium under a contract worth EUR160 million. The plant will not only help to meet rapidly rising electricity demand in the Java-Bali grid, but will operate on natural gas, thus helping to reduce dependence on liquid fuel.
The current output of the Muara Tawa plant, located 35 km from Jakarta, is 1800 MW. The Alstom-Marubeni consortium built the plant’s combined cycle unit 1 and the gas turbine peaking plant unit 2 in 1995.
Alstom will equip the plant with a GT13E2 gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, Comax steam turbine, turbogenerators and Alspa control system. It will engineer and manufacture the HRSG at its local boiler facility in Surabaya, the capital of East Java.
Marubeni will supply the balance of plant, high voltage switchyard, civil works and erection services.
Strong economic growth in Indonesia is driving rising electricity demand. PLN recently sealed a power purchase agreement with the international consortium developing the Paiton 3 power plant, another key development in the Java-Bali grid.
