The study will consider the optimal size of a facility, within a range of 50 to 500 MW along with the site, land availability and access to electric transmission infrastructure together with generating technologies, including thermal and photovoltaic systems
The study, which will also examine financial incentives and regulatory issues, is the first step in a three-part project, and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The study is being coordinated by EPRI while other participants in the project include Excel Energy, San Diego Gas & Electric Co, Southern California Edison and Black and Veatch among others.
If favourable conclusions are drawn from the study detailed design and engineering of a plant and securing the necessary permits will begin.
At the conclusion of the second step individual participants would then decide whether they wish commit to the construction of a solar plant, which could occur in the 2010 timeframe.
