Portugal gears up for solar auction

16 June 2020

Portugal is preparing to launch a 700 MW solar tender that it delayed earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The country’s Ministry of Energy has opened the qualification phase of the tender, through which it expects to procure up to 700 MW of large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity as well as some energy storage capacity.

Full details of the tender have yet to be made public, but the government is expected to run the tender in August and announce winners in September. Up-to 15-year contracts are on offer for successful bidders, divided into 12 lots for projects located in Alentejo and Algarve.

The tender was originally scheduled to be run in the spring.

Another 500 MW tender is expected to be run later in the year.
